The primary economy of Daufuskie Island from the turn of the 20th century until the 1950s was the harvesting and shucking of oysters. The Hall was built in 1893 to house the Oyster Union Society's meeting and social events. The Society was dissolved when the pollution in the Savannah River ruined the oyster beds and the oystering economy fell apart on Daufuskie.
