Description
Baer Road, Rollinsford, New Hampshire
In the past century or so, the image of an old stone wall has become a nostalgic and endearing icon of New England. Contrary to popular belief, the Pilgrims, Puritans and early settlers did not have to do battle with rocky soil for their planting. In early Colonial times, one was likely to see only a scattered rock pile with other debris, with an occasional small tossed wall used to contain common livestock. It wasnt until later generations moved away from the coastal lowlands into heavily forested areas that the creation of stone walls became possible and practical. But not at first. After cutting down trees to make a field for farming or pasture, most new settlers found a rich fertile layer of soil with few rocks. Over the years, though, the treeless land suffered through frost heaves and soil erosion, and crops of New England potatoes that had been buried gradually made their way to the surface and had to be cleared. Later, as families and communities grew and lots were subdivided, stone fencing became important for establishing property boundaries. (antiquesjournal.com)
