Description
Peg Leg Pete, carved in 1978 from a 12-foot live oak from Charlton County, Ga., was created by master carver Wayne Ervin during the 1978 Shrimp Festival. He used a chain saw to shape the oak into the wooden statue and then applied finishing touches with a wooden mallet. Peg Leg Pete has kept watch over downtown Fernandina for 29 years, first from his post at the riverfront welcome station and later at the corner of Front and Centre streets outside the railway depot.
