Artist's Description
Maj. George R. Fairbanks built his house in 1885 during Fernandina's "Golden Era." He commisioned the home's design to famous architect Robert S. Schuyler. It was the town's most extravagent residence. It had indoor plumbing, a telephone, a cistern for collecting rainwater, and a dumbwaiter for lifting firewood from the basement to the upper floors. Local lore claims that Fairbanks built the house as a surprise for his wife. But, reportedly, Mrs. Fairbanks was not pleasantly surprised. "Too ostentatious," she was rumored to have proclaimed, and the house became known as "Fairbanks' Folly." (Florida's Finest Inns and Bed & Breakfast)
About Dawna Moore Photography
