Description
Praise houses trace their roots to antebellum days when slaves built simple buildings on the plantations where they lived to gather for workship. Praise houses were particularly prevalent on the Sea Islands where there were few formal churches. After the slaves were freed, the tradition of erecting such buildings near the plantations where they once lived continued. Coffin Point Praise House was originally built in 1900 and was rebuilt in the 1950s after a fire and is one of the last three remaining praise houses on St. Helena Island.
